The Iceberg Problem
Are you taking magnesium…Trying herbal teas…Buying blackout curtains…
But still waking up feeling tired like you haven't slept...because you didn't sleep well?
If you’ve been searching for sleep tips, how to stop waking up at night, or help for insomnia, you might be trying to fix the top of the iceberg — not what’s underneath it-the root cause.
Most long-term sleep problems are never about the top of the iceberg. So if we aim to fix the top, the real reason sleep is an issue is because we haven't fixed under the iceberg-the root cause.
🧊 The Top of the Iceberg: What You’re Trying to Fix
Taking magnesium or sleep supplements
Going to bed earlier
Using white noise or sleep apps
Changing your mattress
Forcing yourself to “try harder” to sleep
These things can absolutely help!
But if they’re not working long term, it’s usually because they’re addressing symptoms — not the root.
🌊 Under the Iceberg: The Real Reasons You Can’t Sleep
1️⃣ Yes You Love Scrolling But Why?
Sometimes it’s not poor discipline.
It could be something like loneliness. It’s feeling like you have company or community when you're scrolling. It could be a distraction. It’s could be a way to avoid sitting with your own thoughts.
So you scroll and can't seem to get out of it, meanwhile you sleep late and wake up early and repeat the cycle.
Sleep hygiene is essential as well as finding a way to deal with the loneliness in a healthy way, i.e. a legitimate need needs to be met in a legitimate way.
When you do this you will sleep better!
2️⃣ You Can't Switch Off
It could be that you’re a high achiever who struggles to let go.
You tell yourself:“I’ll sleep after I finish this.”“Just one more thing.”
You work till late into the night — but when you finish, you don’t feel you have the "right" to switch off because you haven't done enough.
You stay busy and feel the need to continue to be productive.
Because slowing down/unwinding feels uncomfortable.
For years, you’ve associated worth with output so when it’s time to rest, your mind resists, or finds something else in the name of relaxing but it's still keeping you busy!
Which means you don't sleep long enough and the cycle continues.
It looks like insomnia. But underneath, it’s feeling you haven't done enough.
When you can give yourself permission to let go, you will sleep better!
3️⃣ You Think It’s Working Nights
And that can be a significant factor.
What is underneath the struggle to come home, unwind and go to bed with your unique circadian rhythm?
You say, “It’s just a bad habit.”
or you may say "I need to do ..."
But the deeper question is: Why don’t you know how to relax without feeling guilty? Why do you need to keep busy even when you've already been busy? Why does relaxing feel so foreign and almost like its not even an option?
Sleep requires surrender.
If you’ve been in control mode for years, surrender can feel foreign.
When you surrender, you will sleep better.
With That Said...
Can you now see why top of the ice berg fixes like Magnesium though helpful, will not give the long term solution?
When the root cause isn’t addressed, those tools may not be as effective as they can be.
The Hard Truth About Sleep Problems
Sometimes a sleep issue is the visible symptom of something deeper.
And sometimes people don’t “do something” about their sleep…
Because on some level, may be they know fixing it might mean facing what’s underneath.
And they’re not ready yet.
That’s human.
But when you are ready — it's not about forcing your body.
It’s about understanding what's really been going on.
When you work below the surface, sleep stops being a fight.
And that’s where real, lasting change begins and you will sleep better.
So...
The root to your sleeping issue is underneath the iceberg.
Deal with that and you will sleep better in the long term and the risk of the sleep problem returning will be much lower.
This time the method will work. Because the iceberg was fully explored.
What do you want to fix? The top of the iceberg or fix the root?
